I have seen some interesting things here in Porto, not the least of which is the ceramic tile called “azulejo” decorating many of the older houses in the Ribeira District.
The Moors originally introduced the “azulejo” style to the Iberian Peninsula when they conquered these lands. The word “azulejo” stems from an Arabic word meaning “little, polished stone.”
When Portugal’s King Manuel I visited Sevilla in 1503 and saw the many Moorish “azulejos” there, he decided to decorate his palace in that same style. Soon, the rest of the Portuguese people followed his example.
Have you ever thought how you would like to decorate the outside of your house? What colors would you use?
