I just discovered that the Danube River runs through more countries than any other river in the world. Can you guess how many?
The Danube River runs through 10 countries! They are:
The Danube starts in the Black Forest of Germany and empties into the Black Sea. It is 1,770 miles long! Budapest has 8 bridges that span the width of the Danube. They all have to be tall enough to allow different kinds of vessels such as cargo ships, cruise liners and speed boats to pass under them.
For years, the people of Budapest built their lives around the river. Many fished in it and used it to ship cargo to other cities along the route. Today, there is also a thriving tourist/cruise business on the river as well. However, if you don’t want to spend too much, just get a regular Budapest transport ticket and take a ride on one of the local water taxis! A good place to catch it is on the east side of Margarit Island.
I found a really neat park on the south side of Budapest. It is on a half island called the Budapart-Kopaszi gát. It is a great place for kids. I saw people biking, picnicking, walking and even kayaking there. I would love to learn to kayak! Maybe I can build a little kayak just my size.
Your river-roaming friend,
PS-Don’t forget to go and see the river at night in Budapest! The lights and their reflection is the water will take your breath away!
