Hi friends!

How many of you like to read? Reading is one of my favorite things to do…especially when I am riding on a train or a plane. Have you ever heard of the book, “Don Quijote” by the Spanish author, Miguel de Cervantes? If so, can you remember who the two main characters are?

As you heard in the video above, the two main characters of the Cervantes’ book are: Don Quijote de La Mancha and his sidekick, Sancho Panza!

Interesting fact: This book has been translated into 145 languages around the world!

Above is a picture of the Cervantes Monument in the middle of Plaza España in Madrid, Spain. In the front, you can see statues of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza. In the middle is a statue of the author, Miguel de Cervantes.

At the very top of the statue is another sculpture of five women representing the five continents. They are all reading the book, “Don Quijote.” Below, you can see Europe (lady with helmet) reading with America.

After I saw this monument, I became curious about this book, “Don Quijote” (also spelled “Don Quixote.”) Why was it so important? I found out that many people consider it to be the first modern novel. Up until that point, most fiction was based on fantastical romance. “Don Quijote” started to introduce realism and a look at the characters’ inner-life and transformation into fiction. This new style would greatly influence the way people wrote fiction in the future.

Do you have a favorite author? Is so, what do you like about their writing?

Your book-loving friend,

Peter
