What is an Egyptian temple doing here in the middle of Madrid, Spain?
“El Templo de Debod” (The Temple of Debod) was originally built in upper Egypt and dedicated to the Egyptian god, Amun in the second century, BC and later dedicated to the goddess, Isis.
In 1960, the recently built Aswan High Dam and its newly formed reservoir threatened to destroy this and other ancient monuments. So, Egypt donated this temple to Spain because of Spain’s help in saving other Egyptian temples.
The temple was deconstructed and rebuilt stone by stone. It opened to the public in 1972. This is the only kind of ancient Egyptian structure in all of Spain.
